Painting from a Bad Photo Reference

A snowy day a Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, LI, NY had myself and friends tramping through the drifts taking reference photos for paintings. I completely forgot that my camera has a snow scene setting and I was shooting into the sun which didn't help this situation at all, but I had to have a picture of the incredible shadows cast by that big beech tree on the snow. To create a painting from this bad photograph I had to reinvent the colors in the scene and exaggerate them. It helped to look at other photos around that area to get a better idea of the colors in the bushes and trees. I chose to do this in watercolor on the Ampersand Aquabord, because of the amazing lifting and softening effects possible with that board. Also watercolor gives me the ability to do the fine calligraphy of the branches that I can't achieve with oil paint.
Happy Painting!
Nancy

I like the rays of light coming throught he trees on the bad photo.
It would be interesting if you painted rays of sunlight.

Nancy, this is really great work, what a difference between the photo and your creation! I love the colours and contrast on your painting, snow is not easy to capture and yet you have managed to do it here beautifully!
